Lotus’s Electrifying Future: The Emira to Make Way for a New Electric Sports Car in 2027

Lotus, the iconic British performance brand, is gearing up for an electrifying future with the upcoming release of its latest electric sports car, codenamed Type 135. 

Scheduled for unveiling in 2025 and slated for sale in 2027, the Type 135 represents the essence of the Lotus brand—a two-seat sports car that epitomizes performance and driving pleasure. Mike Johnstone, Lotus Group’s Chief Commercial Officer, emphasized the significance of maintaining this focus, highlighting the pivotal role of the sports car in defining Lotus’ identity and future trajectory.

Replacing the Elise and the Emira in Lotus’ lineup, the Type 135 will ride on the Lightweight Electric Vehicle Architecture (LEVA), originally developed for Lotus and Alpine’s collaborative project, which is now defunct. This architecture promises a chassis structure that is 37 percent lighter than its predecessor, the Emira, although the incorporation of a substantial battery pack may slightly increase the overall weight.

Offering versatility, the Type 135 will come with one- and two-motor powertrains, generating outputs ranging from 469 horsepower to a staggering 872 hp. Moreover, the platform’s flexibility allows for both rear- and all-wheel drive configurations, with potential plans for a torque-vectoring AWD setup akin to the Evija’s advanced system.

Despite its impressive performance figures, the Type 135’s power output falls slightly below that of Lotus’ other electric models—the Emeya sedan and the Eletre SUV, which boast even higher horsepower options. Nevertheless, the Type 135 aims to strike a balance between performance and practicality, offering battery options ranging from 66.4 kWh to 99.6 kWh, delivering an estimated range of 300 to 450 miles.

With ambitious sales targets of 10,000 to 15,000 units annually on a global scale, Lotus is poised to redefine the landscape of electric sports cars, ushering in a new era of performance and innovation while staying true to its heritage of delivering exhilarating driving experiences.
