Lotus Uses Recycled Haute Couture And Deletes PVC In Emeya Interior in Carrollton, TX

Lotus just unveiled its Emeya electric performance sedan in New York City, and it’s not just about speed. The car, set to hit the U.S. market in late 2024 and compete with the likes of Tesla Model S and Porsche Taycan Turbo, is making waves for its sustainability features.

Marie-Camille Lecoq, Lotus’ head of sustainability and materials, spilled the details on the Emeya’s eco-friendly interior to InsideEVs. The company claims to be a pioneer in using recycled cloth in its interior, steering away from traditional recycled fiber materials. According to Lecoq, they opted for a unique approach: “We are using recycled fashion industry garments, and we chose to combine those materials and create a new yarn for the interior, and we are pleased with its premium look.”

One standout feature is the Emeya’s PVC-free cabin, a rarity in the automotive world. Polyvinyl chloride materials have been criticized by Greenpeace as “poison plastics” due to their potential environmental impact. Lecoq emphasized the significance of this move, stating, “We also have a PVC-free cabin, which is quite rare today.”

While Lecoq didn’t disclose the exact proportion of sustainable materials in the Emeya’s cabin, she assured that it’s substantial. According to her, the car boasts a full polyurethane (PU) interior, covering every touchpoint in the vehicle. This not only enhances the premium feel but also contributes to weight savings of up to 20-30 percent compared to traditional leather.

Although Lotus hasn’t achieved a completely sustainable interior, Lecoq clarified that they focus on what matters most to consumers: “We are covering pretty much all the surfaces with premium and sustainable materials, especially the ‘A surfaces’ that customers touch regularly.”

Despite the sustainability efforts, Nappa leather remains an optional feature, raising questions about the brand’s commitment to its eco-friendly goals. Lecoq defended the choice, saying, “I don’t think leather is bad. It depends on your supplier, the quality, and also how you treat animals. It’s a bioproduct; there is no chemical applied to it, so there is space for it.”

In the pursuit of a greener automotive industry, Lotus seems to be pushing boundaries and making strides toward sustainability in Emeya’s interior, emphasizing that the journey is ongoing.
