Lotus Unveils 1,000-HP Electric Hypercar Designed to Meet Buyers’ Desires

At a targeted weight of under 3,500 pounds, the Theory 1 is impressively light for an electric vehicle—over 600 pounds lighter than Lotus’s Evija, thanks to its carbon fiber chassis and other advanced materials, including recycled and cellulose-based fiberglass.

One of the most attention-grabbing features of Theory 1 is its doors. They don’t simply swing out or tilt up like on other exotic cars; instead, they rotate upward and slide rearward, creating a unique entryway that feels as futuristic as the car itself. Once inside, the driver sits in a central position, flanked by two slightly offset seats, reminiscent of the iconic McLaren F1. The seats themselves are integrated into the carbon chassis, keeping the weight low while still ensuring safety and comfort.

Lotus has also incorporated a new technology called Fluidics, which integrates inflatable bladders into various parts of the car, including the seats, doors, and even the steering wheel. These bladders inflate and deflate to provide haptic feedback, allowing drivers to feel the road and car dynamics in ways never before possible. They can even create physical buttons and switches that emerge from a flat panel only when needed. It’s a level of minimalism and interactivity that feels straight out of a sci-fi movie, pushing the boundaries of what a driver-focused experience can be.

The Theory 1 may never reach production in its entirety, but it embodies the company’s path forward.
